The Wildlife

Mountain range of Andujar Natural Park

The greatest animal diversity in Spain

Of the faunistic richness of this park, the numerous species that exist in it bear witness, since this wealth is largely due to the uses to which these mountains have been destined, such as extensive livestock and big game. To get a clear idea of the importance of this natural space we must mean that 53% of amphibians, 37% of reptiles, 20% of fish, 39% of mammals and 48% of birds present in Spain are represented in this natural park.

All this is due to the geographical situation, the climatology, the orography, the state of conservation, the almost null existence of population centers and the minimal presence of visitors; what until now has given place to an absolute tranquility for the fauna.

Mammals

Of the mammals, is remarkable the presence of the wolf (possibly the only specimens from Andalusia together with those of the neighboring Sierra de Cardeña and Montoro Natural Park), the Iberian lynx, the mongoose, the otter, the badger, the marten, the genet and the Wildcat. Of the hunting species, we can find the deer and the boar, very abundant, as well as the mouflon, the fallow deer, the hare and the rabbit. There is also a small population of roe deer, which, due to its scarcity, is considered a protected species.

Our park also has several fighting bull ranches of renowned national category.

At present, the mountain range of Andujar Natural Park, mostly occupied by private hunting farms, continues to be a sanctuary of tranquility crossed by steep paths and paths where it is necessary to enter to discover its beauty.

Birds

Of the birds of this park, say that have been counted up to 178 species, many of them of extraordinary importance, highlighting the imperial eagle, the black vulture or the golden eagle, being also abundant the short-toed eagle and the goshawk. It is also possible to observe the Egyptian vulture and the peregrine falcon.

Other nesting raptors are the vulgar kestrel, the black kite or the booted horn. As for the nocturnal raptors, the eagle owl, the owlet, the tawny owl and the barn owl are important for their abundance.

In turn, in the existing reservoirs in the park it is possible to see aquatic birds such as the common pochard, the gadwall, the mallard or the common teal, as well as the gray heron and the little grebe. Finally, mention the great community of birds in the large expanses of Mediterranean scrub.

Reptiles

As for the reptiles, there is an excellent representation with species such as the European pond turtle, the green-black lizard, the pink gecko, the collared lizard, eight species of snakes, among which is the snake vipervipers, the snake collar, the snake bastard and ladder; and from the family of the vipers, the vibrating beak.

Amphibians

For all this we can find among the amphibians the Iberian newt, the Iberian midwife toad, the San Antón frog or the gallipato.

Fishes

The bogardilla, one of the fish that live in the rivers and reservoirs of the park, is an endangered species that arouses special interest because it exists only in the province of Jaén, more specifically in the waters of the Jándula, the Rumblar, the Robledo and the Guadalquivir, on a surface less than 100 km2. It is also frequent the gypsy or Iberian barbel and the river or common boga.
